Before the hurricane: Moscow, November 7, 1987, the Warsaw Pact despots celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Bolshevik coup (the prropaganda fiction named „The Great Socialist October Revolution”).
With the exception of Mikhail Gorbachev, they are all decrepit.
They despise each other, but, more than anything else, they fear the winds of change. One week later, In Brasov, a workers’ demonstration defies Ceausescu’s paranoid regime. Solidarnosc has resurrected in Poland.
Independent peace movement get increasingly vocal in the GDR. Hungary’s Democratic Opposition challenges the slanderous lies about the 1956 Revolution. Civil society is reborn in all these countries. The end of the Soviet Bloc is imminent, the storm can’t be arrested…
